10 6th Class pupils were chosen as the Amber Flag Committee for 2020 / 2021 and they did a fantastic job throughout the year, from thinking up the Pay It Forward intiative to the Spreading Kindness school wide initiative and then culminated in the most fantastic FunDay Fundraiser. It was a tremendous day and €684 was raised on the day for Pieta House - well done everyone who volunteered as instructors and who participated and donated! THANK YOU EVERYONE!

Good morning 5th Class! Or good afternoon if you're starting your work a little later :)
So, you may have heard, the schools will definitely be closed next week, until after Easter at least. This was expected but it's still sad and will take a bit of getting used to. As the weeks go on we will change the work and include some new things, but for now we are going to stick to what I gave you on the day we closed. You'll see some suggestions for timing your work below. As always, please send me an email if you need some help.
Oh and fantastic news...we're at 30,188 questions answered in ixl! Wowza! Keep it up guys :)

Tuesday 24th March 2020
Happy Tuesday 5th Class!
First some fairly amazing news...to date as a class we have answered 29,848 questions on ixl! That is an incredible number! Thank you to all who have been able to access ixl and answer the questions. It's 12.35pm at the moment and I can see 5 pupils are working hard...you know who you are! Maybe, just maybe, we will hit the 30,000 mark by the end of the day!
I have decided to post answers to work on Friday only. This is because we can't be certain if the whole class is getting through the work day by day as I know many homes have different work schedules. So, on Friday I will post all the answers here. In the meantime, could I ask any pupils who can to send me a picture of your work, or to get your parents to do so. Just take a pic on your camera and send it via email to the address I gave your parents.
Also, to those of you reading Wilderness - IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT! Chapter 11 is very long so you can split them over 4 days as follows:
Tuesday = Chapter 11 Part 1 (11 pages)
Wednesday = Chapter 11 Part 2 (12 pages)
Thursday = Chapter 12
Friday = Chapter 13
Hope you have a great day and remember I'm available as always to take emails and help you out however I can during school hours.
Mr Kelly.

Monday 22nd March 2020
Good morning 5th Class! We are in the first full week of our new way of learning. I'm sure there have been nice things about being at home - perhaps you've been able to sleep in a little bit longer, or you've had your pets as constant companions (apparently there was a dachshund named Rolo in the USA who sprained their tail wagging it so much because their owner was at home all the time!) or you can get something to eat whenever you want. And of course there are probably some downsides - you're missing your friends, you can't go outside as much, the news is a little bit scary. The important thing to remember with all of this is that THINGS WILL GET BACK TO NORMAL! It might take some time but they will. And I want to make sure that when they do 5th Class will be ready to go, will be healthy, well and will have kept working as much as they can through the shutdown. So try your best folks, give it your best shot. You'll find your work below, with some new suggestions. Hope you have a great day and remember I'm available to take emails and help you out however I can during school hours.

5th Class visited RDS this week for the annual Science Blast. We joined hundreds of children in presenting findings from our experiments. Our question was "What would happen if there were two suns?". We used a space simulator called Universal Sandbox 2 and discovered that our home would no longer be habitable!
Our day at the RDS was amazing. We saw science shows, exhibitor stalls and spoke snd discussed science with loads of other children. And there was good news to finish, as we received incredibly positive feedback from the judges and came home with our trophy!

We had so much fun during Maths Week! We worked on our problem solving skills, had a connect four tournament, played on the tablets, made a maths photo, went on a maths trail and had a great quiz. Thanks To Ms McCabe for all her hard work!
4th Class
Welcome to Fourth Class! We have had a great first month back at school and have settled in really well. We are very lucky that Alan Duffy has joined our class this year. We created self-portraits . Can you guess who is hiding behind their picture below??
Multicultural Week
Multicultural week got off to a great start this year. On Monday we had a very special visit from Liz's mother Tatiana who taught us wonderful facts about Brazil. We learned loads of interesting pieces of information from Tatiana and we were delighted to welcome her to 3rd class. Obrigada Tatiana!
On Tuesday again 3rd class were extremely fortunate to be given the opportunity to bake with Zihan and Zixiang's mother Shoumei. She taught us how to make delicious cupcakes and we also got to decorate them with sugar icing which was lots of fun. Have a look at our creations below.
Organic Market Visit
3rd class had a great time visiting a local farmer's market earlier this month. We planted radishes that we were allowed to bring home. We learned about the different vegetables on sale in the market and about how they grow. We even got the chance to taste some fruits and vegetables! The Green Door market were very kind and even gave us an apple to each for the journey home.

Active Week
Active week was a huge success again this year. 3rd class had the opportunity to participate in loads of fun activities such as the obstacle course against 4th class, a relay race, tug of war and lots more. Take a look at us pulling hard during tug of war Tuesday!
Our Viking Visit
We were so lucky in 3rd class this month we had a visit from a fantastic historian who taught us all about the Vikings. He even brought a very special Viking friend with him! We learned all about where the Vikings were from and all the equipment Vikings used. We even got the chance to pass around swords and axes! Did you know Vikings combed their hair with bones? We also made a Viking long ship from recycled cardboard come have a look outside room 9.

Antarctica
This month in 3rd class we have been learning all about Tom Crean and his voyage to the South Pole. We made timelines of important events in Tom's life. We learned lots facts about Antarctica and the animals who live there such as penguins. We decided we'd make some penguins of our own. Due of the cold weather lately we also made some hats for them so they'd be nice and cosy in room 9. Have a look at some of our creations below.

There were lots of scary witches, wizards and vampires in 3rd class on Friday! Who knew they'd all love making our healthy(ish) Halloween snacks so much. All we needed were apple slices, peanut butter and white chocolate chips.
Green Schools Energy talk
This week we were very lucky to be one of the classes chosen to learn all about global warming and energy awareness. We had a fantastic talk all about how we can conserve energy at home and in school. We got to join in and do some experiments about how energy can change.

Procedural Writing
This month here in 3rd class we have been working very hard at improving our procedural writing and we have had lots of fun doing it. We had the chance to write a procedure all about how to blow bubbles from bubblegum and we even got a chance to practise using real bubblegum in class. Luckily Ms. Duggan was an expert at bubblegum chewing and helped us too.

We love Science!
We had lots of fun making bubbles with our secret recipe and pipe cleaners during science this week. We're really looking forward to more experiments throughout the year.
Art Attack!
We have been doing some wonderful art work this week. We learned all about sketching and using cross hatching to make our drawings look more realistic. We drew pictures of our new water bottles. Have a look at our wonderful results.
