SPACE
The Restaurant/Cafe
One of our favourite parts of the Restaurant Aistear theme was making our own playdough using a simple recipe! At the very end of the theme, we opened our own Restaurant/Cafe in the classroom. We invited all of the teachers and the Junior Infant class to come and visit the Restaurant and pick up some take away treats! We made sure to have sanitiser and masks available to make sure we all stayed safe and healthy.
HALLOWEEN 2021
Things got very spooky in Senior Infants this Halloween. We spent the last week before the holidays exploring pumpkins and witches potions during Aistear. On Friday, it was dress up day and myself and Susan got some huge frights as everyone came into the classroom. Everyone have an amazing Halloween break and stay safe!!
Safety Walk
For the last two weeks before the Halloween break, we were focusing on safety while walking to and from school, how to exit the school through the school gate safety, and how to walk over to the adults waiting outside in the safest way possible. This is a very important topic because so many of the children in Senior Infants walk to school every day! We also spoke about how walking to school every day is a very kind thing to do for the environment. We will continue to discuss road safety throughout the year!

Teddy Bear Picnic
Everyone brought their favourite teddy into school this week for a Teddy Bear Picnic in the garden. All of the children introduced their teddys to the class and explained why they love them so much. There was huge excitement when we returned to the classroom after break time to find all of the teddys has moved around the room all by themselves!! |
Welcome back to school!!
Our first theme this year is Autumn. We have been exploring nature and the signs of Autumn that we can see around us. The children have been collecting conkers, leaves, hazelnuts and lots of other amazing things from their own nature walks and we have displayed them on our Nature Table. In Aistear this month, we have been creating hibernation huts for all of the animals that are preparing for winter and hibernation. The children have settled back into school very well and we are looking forward to another great year of learning!!

Micky Mouse Picnic
As a special end of year treat, Micky Mouse came to visit our school!! He brought us some treats and some coloring to do during the day. What a great way to end Junior Infants!
SPACE - our first theme for home learning
Here are some photos of some pictures that the children have created this month! Our first theme for home learning was Space. We had loads of fun reading about aliens, drawing alien pictures, taking virtual trips to the moon and learning about the planets in our Solar System.
We are also learning about 3D shapes!!
Reading + Writing...
Establishing a love for reading and writing is one of the most important parts of our work in Junior Infants. We have started to enjoy doing picture walks through our books in the class library and picking out some of the Dolch words and initial sounds that we have learned so far. The children also love using play-dough to write some Dolch words and letters.

Preparing for Christmas
|
We had so much fun preparing for Christmas this year. We made a video of our class Nativity play for all of the parents to watch and enjoy. We also worked very hard during Aistear time! We were exploring the toys workshop at one station; making and repairing toys, stamping parcels and preparing Santa's sleigh. Over in the Post Office area we were sorting letters and parcels, weighing packages and putting the correct stamps on each item to be sent out for delivery.

Aistear Theme: The Restaurant
During the month of November, the children enjoyed exploring The Restaurant during Aistear. We set up a restaurant and kitchen in the role play area, we had fun making a restaurant scene in Small World and we designed our own pizzas and menus in the free writing and junk art areas. The children's oral language and vocabulary really improved during this Aistear theme, and we are now very excited to see what the next theme brings.
Cotton Bud Painting
WE LOVE PAINTING in Junior Infants. Last Friday we were painting teapots and teacups to celebrate learning our new nursery rhyme, 'I'm a Little Teapot'. Cotton bud painting is a fine motor activity that promotes concentration and strengthens our little hands to improve pencil grip.
Halloween!!
On the last Friday before midterm we had a Halloween party! Some children dressed up for the day and we had a blast!! Here are some photos of our 'Witches Potions' station where we made our own gruesome potions in the cauldrons and said some spooky spells.
Science experiments
The children were enjoying the well known story The 3 Little Pigs so much that we decided to conduct an experiment to test some of the materials that the pigs used to make their houses. We used Lego as the bricks, lollipop sticks as the wood and paper straws as the straw. A hairdryer was used as the 'Big Bad Wolf' and it came along to try to blow the houses down. The children loved building and constructing the different houses and were excited to see the outcome. We predicted which house would stay in tact based on how strong each material was.
Aistear Theme: Doctor's Surgery
The children have been learning all about The Doctor's Surgery during Aistear integrated play stations. The children really enjoyed adopting the roles of doctors, nurses, receptionists and patients through role play activities. We built hospitals and ambulances using Lego. We made x-ray samples using cotton buds and black sugar paper. We used play dough to make surgical equipment and we played Doctor's surgery vocabulary bingo! Another advantage to this theme was that we got a chance to explore how to stay safe and healthy during Covid-19 in more depth. This helped the children to understand and come to terms with the new changes that we are now facing. Here are some photos of the children playing and learning.
Settling in...
So the past few weeks the children have been working extremely hard and settling in great.
We have begun introducing sounds and letter names to them and so far we have covered S,A,T,I and P so if you could practice these with the children at home it would be great. they may find them in your bedtime stories or all of the above letters have a song with actions so ask them to show you. If you google the letters of put them into youtube with the word jolly phonics you should find the songs anyhow.
In Maths we have been sorting and classifying for more than one property and the children are enjoying working in their small groups for station activities.
