Home, School, Community Liaison

We are very fortunate to have the Home School Community Liaison (HSCL) scheme here in our school. The aim of the scheme is to promote partnership between home, school and the community and to ensure that every child participates fully in the school scheme. It recognises the role of parents as the primary educators of their children, the influence of the home environment and seeks to promote a partnership between school and parents and the local community. The scheme coordinator in our school is Brían Comaskey. She looks after the welfare of the parents of Scoil Treasa Naofa. She is available to discuss, on a personal level, matters of concern with parents in their own homes or at school, whichever the parent prefers.

Some Covid 19 Updates:
Dear Parents/Guardians,
This is a really strange time but I wanted to touch base to share some tips and tricks that might make the next few weeks at home more manageable. Maybe some of them will be useful for you and maybe some won't work so pick and choose to best suit your child.
While I think it is absolutely brilliant to see so many companies, teachers and early childhood educators sharing ideas and activities for you to use at home, I find that it can be totally overwhelming and can lead to parents and guardians wondering if they are doing enough or comparing themselves to other parents. You know your child best – you know what they need and what works best for them so do it your own way. Don’t be under any pressure to complete every single fantastic idea that you see. Pick and choose what you think will work best for you and your family.

A lot of children will really benefit from being informed about what is happening. Why are schools closed? Why are we asked not to go to the playground or to crowded places? What will happen if we get Corona Virus? Why can’t we go and visit Granny and Grandad?

Let them be kids!
This is a scary time for everyone. It’s strange to be working from home and not really sure when this will all be over. Our ‘normal’ day to day routines are completely changed so it’s really important to remember this – be kind to yourself and don’t be too hard on yourself to perform or meet the same goals and targets you might be able to achieve at work. The same goes for the children. This is a tricky time for them – I’d imagine the initial delight of having 2 weeks off school has worn off a bit as they are not able to just carry on as normal, meeting and playing with friends and going to G.A.A. or rugby or gymnastics. Let them have time to just be kids as they try to make sense of what is happening and process the changes to their normal lives.
Routines
Children need routine – no matter how laid back they may seem. It is really important to maintain some sense of normal for them throughout the time they are off school and can’t go to training, etc. I have made a general timetable that may work for you and your family. Please see attachments below.
P.E./Exercise

School on TV
RTE is also broadcasting an hour of 'school on TV' to support children and their parents at home from March 30th between 11am and 12pm, aimed at first to sixth class pupils. It will be available on catch-up on RTE Player, while worksheets will be available on RTE.ie/learn
National Tree Week
This week was to be National Tree Week. Unfortunately it has been postponed until a later date. However, I have included a few activities that your child may enjoy. Also, it's a great way to enhance a walk especially in this glorious weather we are having at the moment.

- Use the time to revise what your child has learned already rather than worrying about what they have not yet covered. An excellent place to start is their tricky words and revise their addition tables - tables are in their homework diaries.
- Teach your child ‘real life’ skills – tying their shoelaces, baking and cooking, folding laundry, cleaning their bedrooms, etc.
P.E./Exercise
- Walk, jog, run, cycle around your local area.
- Create an obstacle course in your house or back garden.
- Youtube/Go Noodle
- The Body Coach, Joe Wicks, has announced he will be holding live daily PE lessons for kids to help keep children fit and healthy while they are not at school during the coronavirus pandemic. Joe will be running the live PE lessons every weekday at 9am: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCAxW1XT0iEJo0TYlRfn6rYQ

How does the HSCL Scheme work?
A Home-School-Community Liaison co-ordinator is assigned to a school in a disadvantaged area. Activities undertaken by our HSCL Mary McCann are:
- Home visitations - Organisation of in-school activities and courses for parents - Advising and supporting parents on education- related issues such as study skills and the promotion of a stimulating home learning environment - Meeting with community interests relevant to the education and welfare of pupils in the school - Encouraging co-operation between home, school and community interests. |
Healthy Food made Easy
The above parents took part in the heathy eating cookery and nutritional course which aims to show parents how to cook healthy nutritious meals on a budget. It also aims to make them more aware of the make up of their diet and the food they intake as a family in order to make more informed healthy choices going forward. It was great fun and we loved the chats over our tasters during the sessions. It was also lovely that the different cutlures were sharing recipes and flavoursome tricks that enhanced all our own meals at home. |
