Someone who has been an absolute inspiration to us all in relation to health and wellbeing is Paul from 6th Class!! He has worked so hard at looking after both his mental and physical health during this time and he has encouraged us all to do the same. I just watched this amazing video ‘What I eat in a day’ from Paul, and I now understand why he’s so strong and how he’s able to do all those tough physical challenges with ease!
Check out his video below:

‘Do things for people, not because of who they are or what they do in return, but because of who you are.’
You can show someone kindness with a simple smile, caring words or by offering them a helping hand. It costs nothing to be considerate and thoughtful towards others but the impact is huge! The person who offers the act feels comfort and satisfaction as well as the person receiving it. Even witnesses of kind acts feel their benefits and are inspired.

Wellness Wednesday!!
Mealtimes can be an enjoyable time of the day. An opportunity to sit down and share some food with family or friends, or simply to enjoy a peaceful snack alone.
What we eat has a huge impact on our mind and body. The same way a car needs fuel to keep going, our bodies and minds need the right foods to continue to work at their best.
Lots of you are probably already familiar with the food pyramid. This is a good guideline to use when planning our meals.
We need to be well fuelled for all the fun ‘beat the teacher’ challenges this week so please press the button below and take a look at some reminders, tips, and recipes for a healthy way to fuel your body and mind.
Happy munching!!!
Saving the best till last!! Below is a link to the recipe and method for the delicious meal Ms. McCann prepared for our Multicultural Week. Enjoy!

Talk about it Tuesday!!
How many feelings can you name? Happy, sad, scared, excited?? That's a good start.
There are so many feelings to name. Try coming up with some of your own.
No matter how you feel — good or bad — it's healthy to put your feelings into words. Talking about feelings helps us feel close to people who care. It helps us feel better when we're sad or frightened.
A good strategy for understanding our feelings:
1. Think of the name for how you feel. (Let's say you feel nervous.)
2. Think of why you feel that way. (Let's say you are nervous because you have a big football game in the morning)
3. Put them together into words. (Say to yourself, "I feel nervous about my football match tomorrow.")
Poetry is a great way to express our feelings in words. We can keep our poetry private for ourselves, for the purpose of organising our own thoughts, or we can share it with a friend or family member so they can have a better understanding of us.
I have put a reminder of some different styles of poetry together with some examples. You can find them by pressing the button below. So put your creative caps on and get writing a poem of your own! I’d love to read what you come up with. It can be in any style and based on any topic you choose. Please send on your poetic creations to me at jdolan@scoiltreasanaofa.ie
Ms. Spillane wrote this beautiful poem based on the school closures. She uses words and pictures to deliver her message. Ms. Spillane wrote the poem from the perspective of the school building; imagining how lonely the school must feel without all of us! This is a poetic strategy known as personification. You can find it below, enjoy!

Mindful Monday!!
Since our school closed on the 12th of March, we’ve all experienced a challenging time. Things have changed temporarily and we’ve had to adapt. It is always important to look after our mental health as well as our physical health. Learning how to relax our minds and how to focus our thinking (towards helpful rather than unhelpful thoughts) are two very important wellbeing skills to have.
The Five Ways to Wellbeing are simple actions to practise each day to improve our mental health.
They are: Connect (with friends and family)
Be Active (movement and exercise)
Take Notice (pay attention to the present)
Keep Learning (new skills)
Give (your time and your kind words).
Mindfulness refers to the ‘take notice’ aspect. I know lots of you have already worked on Grounding this year so you understand the importance of settling your mind and body. Practising mindfulness can help improve our ability to perform in all kinds of situations, from school work to sports, and it can even help us to sleep better!

Our 6th Class may have missed out on their last Active Week in Scoil Treasa Naofa but thankfully they've had a very active year so far and they've really embraced Active Week @ Home! Have a look and see!
Hello everyone, Hope you're all keeping well!!
At this time it's not only important to keep our brains working but also our bodies. Beneath I have posted a small workout you can do at home to keep yourself fit and healthy. Remember: Movement is improvement!

High knees x40
Heel taps x40
Squats x20
Burpees x20
Jumping jacks x30
Strides x30
Lunges x30
Mountain climbers x20
Obviously do what you can. If you need to build up to this then lower the repetitions . If you find it ok, you can add more (a little extra each time).
Also be imaginative and come up with your own exercises that you can add to this little circuit.
If at all possible, going for walks or even spending time moving around your garden is great. If that is not possible, helping with chores at home is also good for keeping yourself moving.
Always be safe and do what you can, where you can!!

Just look at how busy we've been!
ESB Science Blast
5th class took part in a research project called Science Blast. This entailed the children asking a question, they could choose anything at all, they then had to go about researching and experimenting and then present their findings at the RDS to a panel of expert judges from the world of science, technology and medicine. I was delighted to hear that the children chose a research project based around the world of exercise. The spent weeks learning about the effects of exercise, putting into practice what they learned and they also spent a lot of time training. Their main finding was a positive one, they found that each group got fitter and stronger over the duration of the project.
I've yet to hear all the ins and outs of what happened but once I do it'll be posted up here. Well done 5th.

Peil
Bhí Blitz peile ar siúl an Aoine seo chaite. Ghlac na cailíní as rang a 5 agus rang a 6 páirt ann. Bhí siad ag imirt in aghaidh scoileanna eile. Bhí lá iontach acu. They had been training away for this blitz after school and it was clear to see the improvement in their skills. Maith sibh go léir.
Collaboration
As we already are aware of the school is working on achieving its Energy Flag. This gave yet another opportunity for us to collaborate on initiatives, education and activities. On the 15th of February we had a no energy day, we weren't allowed to switch on anything at all. The active committee then came up with the idea of making it a high energy day from our perspective. We set up all kinds of activities both inside and outside the school. We had tug-of-war, football, treasure hunts and trails, gymnastics and trips to the playground. We also had use of our local community hall which some classes used for all kinds of games and activities. All in all is was a great day. The atmosphere amongst students and the teachers was just so refreshing, no use of electricity and plenty of activity just made for a really nice day, broke from routine and kept things fresh which we all benefited from.
What could be around the corner in 2019...
Scoil Treasa Naofa's Fittest Class!!
We are currently planning, putting together a programme that will hopefully last six weeks, starting in January/February. We hope that the children will get the opportunity to make massive gains in terms of teamwork, fitness, fun, friendship and competition. When the finer details are finalised you can look here for the format and for some cool photos following the progress and achievements of each class.

TEAM: Together Everyone Achieves More...
With the school working towards a Green Schools Energy Flag it has given us the opportunity to tackle energy at all levels; From fuelling the world in a better, more sustainable way to fuelling our bodies in a better and healthier way. It has opened up discussions around these topics throughout the school which is fantastic. Highlighting one has led to discussions about the other. This can only help us in our mission in school to become more energy aware and efficient and also to become fitter and healthier.
12 Exercises of Christmas
Starting today, with 12 days altogether left until the holidays, the children have been handed out a 12 day exercise programme to follow, best of luck everyone and enjoy! (This programme will be followed in school Monday-Friday and then on the weekend the children will do their Saturday and Sunday programme at home).

Raising the Active Flag...
All of us here in Scoil Treasa Naofa would like to take the opportunity to thank Lindsay Peat and Ailsa Hughes from the Irish Womens Rugby Team for coming in to help us raise the Active Flag. They were two inspirational athletes to have in and were great with the children. It was so interesting to listen to them telling us about their life in sport. Go raibh míle maith agaibh agus go n-éirí libh amach anseo.

Beat the Street
We are lucky enough to be taking part in this fabulous initiative. Beat the street has basically turned Dublin City into a huge game. Our children, parents and teachers have taken on this task with serious enthusiasm and competitiveness, which is great to see. Children have been roaming the streets, maps in hand, with parents and teachers alike tapping away, gathering up points for the school. Keep up the great work and stay active!!
Here are some fabulous photos of the school walk we had picking up points. Thanks to all the parents and grandparents who came along and also a huge thank you to Ciara from Beat the Street for taking the time to come out and talk to the parents and bring us around.

Today the green flag and active flag committees came together to do a spring clean of the local community. It is a great way to keep active, keep clean and get involved in helping the local and school communities!

Active committee at work again
For the second time this year the active committee have completed an audit and clear out of all the sports and PE equipment. We decided that it would be a great idea to go through all of the sports equipment again and to clean it up after Active week. It was a big job but the committee tackled it with the same enthusiasm they show with every active task.

What a wonderful week
Below are some photos of Active week. In the slideshows we were trying to show the fun we had but to really experience what happened I think everyone in Scoil Treasa Naofa would agree you needed to be there. It was an excellent week and we are all looking forward to next years already!!
Such a treat in active week
WE were lucky enough to have an inspirational visitor in on the Wednesday of Active week! Natalya Coyle took time out of her busy training schedule to come in and talk to us about all sports of everything :) We got a cool insight into all things Olympics (we even got to hold the Olympic torch!!!!) She told us all about her sporting background and interests. It was great to have someone of such interest coming in to talk to us! Both teachers and students alike were blown away. It was a great chance to meet an Irish Olympian and all round nice and interesting person.
Forest schools: Every Friday from April to June the children of 6th class are taking part in the Forest schools programme with Mr Kelly. They head off to the Iveagh gardens to work on their outdoor and adventure skills. Below are some snaps of the fun they are having.
Hell-fire club
5th Class had a great day out on the trails on Monday! They spent the day hiking up to one of the highest points in Dublin where they had a picnic overlooking our fair city. Luckily enough the weather held out for them.

Dads Blitz
All of us here would like to wish our Dads soccer team all the best in the blitz on Friday. The word on the street is that Mr Kloppeskey (Comaskey) has been putting the Dads through their paces in the lead up to the big event. Go n-éirí an t-ádh libh! :)

The members of the committee went around gathering information about clubs that the pupils are involved in outside of school. Below are some snaps of the survey. The results in full are posted on the Active notice board.

Active committee at work
I am disgusted with myself for not taking a before picture of this room. The place was an absolute bombshell but with the hard work of the active committee they made all of our after school club sports equipment so much easier to get our hands on. This photo was taken when the football team were out training so that's why it looks so empty. Now we move onto all of our PE equipment. |
Lá spóirt
Bhí lá iontach againn inniu!! Rinneamar lá spóirt; bhí cluichí, rásanna agus comortaisí eile ar siúl sa chlós. Bhí siad go léir curtha ar fáil trí mheáin na Gaeilge agus bhain na páistí go léir an-taitneamh as. Bhí sé iontach na páistí a chloisteáil ag imirt trí mheáin na Gaeilge agus ag úsáid an teanga! Seo cúpla phictiúr ón lá inniu :)

WOW: Wheel/Walk on Wednesdays
It is great to see all the children that cycle, scoot, walk and run to school everyday but there is room for improvement. We are now looking for everyone to make a special effort to walk/wheel to school on Wednesdays. Even if you are coming from far away, park the car further from school and walk some of the way. It is simple ways like this that help us fit more activity into our days!!

Movement is improvement
School Slogan
We asked all the pupils to try and come up with an active slogan for the school. The Active Committee went through all of them and decided on "Movement is Improvement". I would like to thank everyone who took the time to put one together, there really were some excellent ones, just a pity we had to settle on one but I think the committee did a great job.

Soccer Blitz
I would like to congratulate the girls from 5th and 6th class who were runners up at the soccer blitz on Friday. They have done the school so proud. An added bonus was that they came back with the player of the tournament trophy, WELL DONE!! We will look forward to seeing how the boys team gets on next.

In Scoil Treasa Naofa we are doing our best to make our school a more active place to be. We are implementing lots of new initiatives and working on ways to make school more active and fun. The activity does not stop there, healthy living is a life style and that's why we have opted to take part in Super Troopers by Laya healthcare. The children have received their packs and there are great ways to make life more active and fun at home. We all know the benefits of a healthy lifestyle and that why we are putting a huge emphasis on it in school and hopefully these packs will help you do the same at home.
Marathon Kids
We would like to congratulate 6th class on completing a marathon!! This is no mean feat, they spent weeks and months preparing for and completing each and every single step of the 26.2 miles. Speaking to Mr Kelly and the pupils in 6th they told me about how taking part in this initiative really impacted on them; physically they felt better and healthier, it helped their self-esteem in terms of taking on something that seemed near impossible at the beginning and seeing it through to the end, realising that a little bit each day can lead to something huge and also how just a little run each day helped them relax and clear their heads. So as we can see the benefits of this great initiative was not just physically rewarding but mentally also. Maith sibh!!
To follow on from this initiative we have decided as a school that it would be of great benefit for each class to be involved in a running initiative. We settled on the idea of having each class run the distance of their class. So to explain...
Junior Infants 1 mile
Senior Infants 1 mile
First class 1 mile
Second class 2 miles
Third class 3 miles
Fourth class 4 miles
Fifth class 5 miles
6th class Marathon kids
This shows great progression through the school with mini goals all the way along topped off with Marathon kids. This is not only about being more active, this is about setting goals, working on long term targets, realising a little bit each day contributes to big changes, proves that movement is improvement over time.

10@10
Ten at ten was such a success that we have decided that after each monthly assembly parents, pupils and teachers will go out to the yard to take part in the Active Committees a10bly: Ten minutes of exercise after assembly.
Local Clean up
Working alongside our Green Committee we came up with the idea of a healthy body while helping to create a healthy environment. We spent the afternoon walking the locality in teams picking up all the rubbish from the streets. This was such a success we will definitely be doing it again!! Great to create a partnership in school: Together Everyone Achieves More (TEAM)

Halloween fun
As you can see both Elsa and Anna got a chance to try out hurling, a sport that you wouldn't find in the Kingdom of Arrendelle. After speaking to both of them after the session they seem very keen on introducing it in Arrendelle and believe that both Kristoff and Sven would be a good combative midfield partnership while Olaf would be a deadly little 'nippy' corner forward.
Our Annual Teddy Bears Picnic
Here are some of the snaps of the annual Teddy Bears Picnic. The weather was beautiful and the craic was mighty. Outside of the amazing play ground we had obstacle courses set up, a playground games station and the children also got a chance to play lots of different games with the parachute. Needless to say we all had a great time and are already looking forward to next years.
